When and why to upgrade your ERP

When and why to upgrade your ERP

We all know technology is constantly changing and evolving. Deciding to upgrade to newer software for your business may sometimes be the last thing on your mind. There is an associated expense, and often times it seems that the upgrade is simply a marketing tactic designed to get you to spend more on your solution. However, that’s not usually the case. Upgrades deliver improved functionality and other important features that you shouldn’t ignore, at least not long term. Here are a few reasons you should consider upgrading and a few tips to help you decide when to upgrade your Microsoft Dynamics ERP software.

When to upgrade Microsoft Dynamics ERP?

  1. Your ERP is too “old” to get critical updates/patches from Microsoft
  2. If you’re running a version of Microsoft Dynamics that is several iterations behind the latest version you may find that you’re unable to apply the latest hotfixes and patches, including payroll tax and year-end updates.

  3. There are issues with your current system or your users are too dependent on Excel
  4. If the current software you’re using is responding slower than before or working inefficiently, then it may be time to upgrade or consider an ERP performance assessment. If you are having issues with your current processes or data, then starting fresh with up to date software can remedy that and help your business get back on track.

  5. Your ERP will not run on newer hardware
  6. If you have a new laptop and your old software will not load, then a newer version is needed. Eliminate frustration with an upgrade so you can utilize the full potential of a faster processor.

  7. You’re unable to integrate between other systems
  8. Time spent manually entering data in multiple systems can be costly and inefficient. The convenience of having systems that work seamlessly together will increase efficiency and decrease headache.

Why upgrade Microsoft Dynamics ERP?

  1. To stay current with the latest technology
  2. The software your business uses gives an impression to your customers and your employees, too. Make sure you’re giving the right one. When you have the latest version, it shows your customers they will receive the highest quality service. Your employees will know you care enough to provide them with the best tools to ensure their success.

  3. To gain new functionality and efficiencies with a newer version
  4. Newer versions contain new functions to increase productivity and efficiency. The most current versions are compatible with other hardware, such as smartphones, and iPads, so your business can be productive, even when not in the office. Further, bugs are fixed and enhancements made that can benefit your organization.

  5. To ensure your version is supported by Microsoft
  6. As newer versions are released, older versions are no longer supported by Microsoft. Critical periodic updates to the software will no longer be available which can open security vulnerabilities.

Regular upgrades are important for the life of your business. While you can get away with skipping every version upgrade, depending how long between them you should really make sure you’re as current as possible. Don’t put your business at risk by running outdated or unsupported solutions. It’s just not worth it.
