Make Your Dynamics Reports Run in Seconds, Not Minutes or Days

We have all experienced the delays that come with running a report sometimes. It’s a long, frustrating wait where you aren’t sure if it’s your computer, the data, or something else entirely. You can either wait, staring at a blank screen for a half hour watching the buffering window – or move onto something else. That’s a half hour of productivity wasted on technology, and it doesn’t stop there.

Your co-worker that is waiting to receive this report from you is also sitting around idly. And while he waits, another co-worker is delayed in getting an invoice out without that report in hand. And while she waits impatiently, another co-worker is waiting on the invoices to go out before she can move onto processing payables.

All of these interruptions in the work day eventually add up, especially if there are other core application performance issue symptoms included, like system crashes. In this example, there are 4 employees waiting on a report. If each of them did nothing but wait on this report for a half hour, that’s 2 hours lost in one day. If they have to run that same report a few times a week, we are talking about 6 to 10 hours of lost time in a week. And the crazy part is, this is all assuming that the data in the report is completely accurate and requires no manual work.

Don’t Settle for Sluggish Applications

Whether you’re running Dynamics AX, Dynamics NAV, or Dynamics GP, reporting is an integral component to the decision making that happens in your business.

Let’s say you’ve successfully generated monthly invoices for your clients in Dynamics AX, only a day late. You send them out thinking your job is done but by the end of the day you have received dozens of voicemails and urgent emails from annoyed customers complaining about how their bill is wrong. A delay is one thing, but application issues aren’t just black and white. When reports take too long to process, your data is at risk of being outdated and/or inaccurate.

Think about how long it takes to run a query in Dynamics NAV. When this regular business process takes a few minutes instead of a few seconds, you are missing out on precious time that should be allocated towards other urgent projects and client deadlines. Your clients may get the work done on time but your employees are stressed to the max because they have been waiting on reports to load and don’t have enough hours in the day to finish their work.

When your system is slow, you feel it everywhere. If you have continuous start and stops while trying to pull financial data for your month end close, you’re at risk for not gathering the most up-to-date and precise information from the system. When your data and your system are telling you two different things, it means nothing and you have to start again or do it manually.

Reporting performance can depend on everything from resources and network traffic to processing time and storage. When your data is outdated and/or inaccurate, it leads to a lot of recurrent issues that snowball into something much larger in the long run. They might look like this:

  • Extra days required to complete key accounting processes like month end close
  • Compliance issues from unreliable data and missed deadlines
  • Unhappy customers calling about delayed or inaccurate invoices
  • Staff complaints about slow business applications and being unable to perform their duties

All of these issues can have a huge impact on customer service, employee satisfaction, and ultimately, your bottom line. Because without accurate metrics and KPIs accounted for, you don’t have the right information to help you make important decisions. In order to make accurate decisions, that information needs to be meaningful, timely, and reliable.
