Will Microsoft’s Dynamics GP Basic Email Authentication deprecation affect you?

Will Microsoft’s Dynamics GP Basic Email Authentication deprecation affect you?

Beginning on October 1, 2022, Microsoft began the process of deprecating Basic Authentication for Exchange Online and replacing it with Modern Authentication. Modern Authentication is more secure and offers Multi-Factor Authentication. For Dynamics GP users, this means that email functionality within Dynamics GP versions 18.2 and earlier will no longer function. Going forward, Microsoft will only support Modern Authentication and Dynamics GP users must be on a Dynamics GP version 18.3 or later to enable this functionality.

Who will be affected?

Basic Authentication is used to support email functionality in versions of Dynamics GP earlier than 18.3. Since Basic Authentication has been deprecated, older versions of Dynamics GP will be unable to communicate with Exchange server resulting in emails being unable to be delivered. These changes impact organizations that:

  • Are on a version of Dynamics GP earlier than 18.3 and
  • Currently use email functionality within Dynamics GP

If you are on a version of Dynamics GP earlier than 18.3 and do not use email functionality, these changes should not have impacted you. Additionally, if you are on Dynamics GP 18.3 or higher, this change will not affect you as your version complies with these changes.

Upgrade Dynamics GP

If your version of Dynamics GP is 18.2 or earlier, your Dynamics GP instance will require an upgrade to version 18.3 or later to include Modern Authentication which will enable email functionality. In order to upgrade Dynamics GP, you must have an active Enhancement Plan (EP).

Temporarily re-enable Basic Email Authentication

Microsoft is granting Dynamics GP users the option to re-enable basic authentication for any protocols they need. You may run a self-service diagnostic to re-enable Basic Authentication until the end of December 2022 to continue using email functionality while Dynamics GP is upgraded. During the first week of 2023, those protocols will be disabled for basic authentication use permanently.

For information on temporarily re-enabling Basic Authentication protocols, follow the instructions listed here. If you run into any issues re-enabling protocols, contact our team for assistance.

If you are on 18.3 or later but are experiencing disruptions

If you are encountering issues with email functionality in Dynamics GP, but are on a compliant version, you may need to configure Multi-Factor Authentication. For assistance with this configuration or to troubleshoot why email functionality is not working, contact our Dynamics GP support team.
