D365 Finance & Operations Tip of the Month: Save time on every transaction by setting your session date

By on July 24, 2026

When working in Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (F&O), every new journal entry, invoice, or source document defaults to today’s date. While this works well for day-to-day processing, it can become a major time drain during month-end close or when entering back-dated transactions. Manually updating the date on every transaction not only slows users down but also increases the risk of posting errors.

Fortunately, D365 F&O includes a simple, built-in feature that can eliminate this repetitive task. By setting your session date, you can change the default posting date for your entire login session, making it faster and easier to process prior-period transactions. In this tip of the month, we’ll show you how to use the session date to improve efficiency and maintain consistency across your work.

Tip summary: Change your session date to streamline transaction entry

The session date is the default date D365 F&O uses when you create and post journal entries or source documents during your current login session. Instead of changing the date on every transaction, you can set it once and D365 will automatically apply it to all new transactions until your session ends.

This simple feature can significantly reduce repetitive data entry while helping ensure transactions are posted to the correct business date.

Key benefits include:

  • Eliminates repetitive date entry on journals, invoices, and source documents
  • Reduces posting errors caused by incorrect transaction dates
  • Speeds up month-end close when entering large volumes of prior-period transactions
  • Ensures consistency across batches of related entries
  • Supports more accurate audit trails by ensuring transactions use the appropriate business date

Tips steps: How to change your session date

Prerequisites

Before changing your session date, keep the following in mind:

  • You must have access to the Session date and time menu item (included with the standard System User role).
  • The session date only applies to your current browser session. Refreshing the browser or starting a new session resets the default date to today’s date.

The fastest way to update your session date is directly from the calendar on the D365 F&O home page.

  1. Log in to D365 F&O and navigate to your default dashboard or home page.
  2. Click the desired date on the calendar.

3. Select Yes when prompted to confirm the change.

4. The selected date will now become the default for all new journals and source documents created during your current session.

Alternate method:

You can also update the session date by navigating to:

Modules > Common > Common > Session date and time

Enter the desired date and select OK to apply the change.

Tip best practices:

To get the most value from this feature:

  • Encourage Accounts Payable and General Ledger users to use this feature when processing invoice backlogs or catch-up postings.
  • Set your session date before beginning month-end close activities involving prior-period entries.
  • Remember that transaction pages do not display a visual indicator showing the session date has changed.
  • Refresh your browser (F5) to reset the session date back to today’s date.
  • Before switching to unrelated work, refresh your browser or reset the session date to today’s date.
  • Follow your organization’s month-end close, approval, and review procedures for prior-period postings.

Why this tip matters

The session date is one of the simplest yet most effective productivity features in D365 F&O. By setting the default posting date once per session, users can reduce repetitive data entry, improve posting accuracy, and process large batches of transactions more efficiently during busy accounting periods.
