In a typical or traditional IT environment, if an administrator needed a new server, he/she would (in a virtual environment) have to provision a VM from a template or other media, update the operating system, install patches, configure network settings, and so forth. The administrator would need to confirm that the virtual environment had adequate storage, CPU, Memory, and so forth before provisioning a server. Going one level back, provisioning a physical machine would require days or even weeks to order the equipment, install the operating system, update and patch, and so forth.
With Cloud computing, provisioning a new virtual machine or application takes a minute or less, and with several mouse clicks a fully operational and updated machine can be provisioned. Provisioning 50 machines takes no more time than it does to provision a single machine.
The “pay-as-you-go” or “pay-what-you-consume” model is very cost effective, as it takes much of the IT processing from a Capital Expenditure model (purchasing physical equipment) to an Operating Expenditure model (paying monthly for a service).
