Dynamics 365 F&O Tip of the Month: Open forms in edit mode by default

Navigating and modifying records in Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (F&O) is a routine task for many users. However, having to manually select “Edit” every time you need to make changes can slow down your workflow. Fortunately, F&O allows users to configure a preference that automatically opens forms in Edit mode, saving time and reducing unnecessary clicks.

By opening forms in edit mode, you can ensure that forms open ready for editing—either globally for all forms or individually for specific forms.

To enable all forms to automatically open in Edit mode when applicable:

1. On the Home dashboard, click the Settings Gear in the top-right corner
2. Select User options from the dropdown
3. In the User options window, navigate to the Preferences tab
4. Locate the Default view/edit mode field and select Edit from the dropdown

Now, all applicable forms will open in Edit mode by default, streamlining your workflow.

If you prefer to enable Edit mode for only certain forms, such as All Purchase Orders, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to the desired form (g., All Purchase Orders).
2. In the Action Pane, go to the Options
3. Select Always open for editing to enable this feature.

This ensures that the selected form always opens in Edit mode while leaving other forms in the default Read mode.

Configuring this setting provides several key benefits:
