The Global Search bar in NetSuite is an essential tool for navigating your system and finding the information you need. However, it’s not uncommon to run into challenges where your search yields too many irrelevant results or fails to surface the exact transaction or record you’re looking for. If this sounds familiar, the good news is that there are simple shortcuts you can use to refine your searches and save time.

One of the most effective ways to make the Global Search bar work for you is by using prefixes. These are short codes that narrow your search to a specific type of record. For example, if you’re looking for a vendor, simply type “ven:” followed by the vendor’s name to filter your results to vendor records. Need to search for a vendor bill? Use the prefix “bil:”. If you’re looking for customer invoices, type “inv:”. These shortcuts focus the search, helping you zero in on the information you need without sifting through unrelated results.

Most record types in NetSuite can be refined by using their first three letters as a prefix, making it easy to apply this tip across a variety of searches. Below is a list of pre-fixes for common record types.

Another useful trick is adding a “+” at the end of your search term to include inactive records. This can be especially helpful when working with older data or when a record has been deactivated but is still relevant to your search.
