Business Central Tip of the Month: Register customer payments more efficiently
Processing customer payments can be a repetitive and time-consuming task, especially when working through the Cash Receipts Journal or Deposit screens. For users looking for a faster, more streamlined way to handle incoming payments, Dynamics 365 Business Central offers an alternative: the Register Customer Payments page.
Tip: Use the Register Customer Payments page
The Register Customer Payments feature provides a cleaner, more visual way to reconcile customer payments from a list of unpaid sales documents. Think of it as a working queue that allows you to mark documents as paid and post payments either individually or as a lump sum.
This method speeds up reconciliation and reduces the manual overhead of jumping between journal entries and invoices.
To register individual payments:
- Open the Register Customer Payments page using the search.
- The page will display all posted documents that can receive payments.
- Select the Payment Made checkbox on the line that corresponds to the payment.
- Enter the Date Received and Amount Received.
- Repeat for additional payments as needed.
- Choose Post Payments to update the customer, general ledger, and bank ledger entries.
To register lump-sum payments (same customer & payment date):
- Open the Register Customer Payments
- Select Payment Made on all lines that make up the lump-sum amount.
- Enter the Date Received and corresponding Amount Received on each line.
- Choose Post as Lump Payment to apply the payment across selected documents.
Before using the feature, make sure your Payment Registration Setup is configured with the correct balancing account. This setup ensures that all transactions are posted properly and consistently.
Why use this feature?
The Register Customer Payments feature helps finance teams work more efficiently by consolidating payment processing into one intuitive workspace. It simplifies manual data entry, reduces posting errors, and provides flexibility for handling full, partial, and combined payments.
