Why should I upgrade Dynamics GP?

Microsoft is still supporting Dynamics GP and regularly releases new versions. Upgrading your Dynamics GP system ensures that you have access to new features and functionalities, as well as the resolution of any system glitches. Upgrading regularly also provides you with tax compliance, better security, and more predictable costs. Microsoft is staying committed to Dynamics GP through 2028 and beyond, and they will continue to invest in and support its use. Regular updates to your financial system ensures you can take advantage of everything the latest versions have to offer.

Dynamics GP Lifecycle Policy

To ensure you are able to receive important year-end updates and hotfixes from Microsoft, it is important to be on a version of GP that is eligible for product support. Microsoft’s approach to product updates and support for Dynamics GP depends on the version of GP and its lifecycle policy. The current version of Dynamics GP is governed by the Modern Lifecycle policy which includes continuous access to updates while versions prior to 2019 are governed by the Fixed Lifecycle policy and were only eligible for updates for a finite period of time.

  • Modern Lifecycle policy – Under this policy, Microsoft offers continuous support and servicing, including feature updates, bug fixes and the latest tax updates. Microsoft has committed to releasing new versions of GP and providing support to 2028 and beyond. Under Modern Lifecycle policy, upgrades are provided more frequently and are smaller, more manageable, and less expensive than how Dynamics GP upgrades were historically under the Fixed Lifecycle policy.
  • Fixed Lifecycle policy – Under this policy Microsoft provides mainstream support for 5 years which includes hotfixes and service packs. January 10, 2023 was the last day mainstream support was available for Dynamics GP 2018. This means that mainstream support has ended for all versions of GP on the Fixed Lifecycle policy. Extended support is available for an additional 5 years after mainstream support ends but only includes updates related to security vulnerabilities. After extended support, Microsoft will no longer support the system. If you are on an older version of Dynamics GP your system could be at risk.

What’s new in Dynamics GP?

Dynamics GP receives three updates a year that consist of tax, feature, and year-end updates as well as bug and quality fixes. These updates are typically released in June, October, and December each year. Under the Modern Lifecycle Support policy, GP customers must apply at least one update a year to remain current. By remaining current, customers remain eligible for hotfixes and updates from Microsoft and also avoid large, costly upgrades that can occur when waiting years between updates.

In the October 2022 release, Dynamics GP received several new features and updates to enhance the functionality and usability of this impressive system such as:

  • 1099-NEC form changes and the ability to print the form with lines
  • Workflow updates that enable the option to automatically post approved workflows
  • New functionality to print & email cash receipts to customers
  • A new feature that allows users to inactivate vendor address records as needed
