Changing dimensions on Posted General Ledger Entries in Business Central

Dimensions are a crucial feature of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (BC) that helps companies categorize their financial entries for tracking and analysis purposes. Dimensions are used in combination with General Ledger (G/L) Accounts and are tagged to transactions, master data, and other pieces of the business that could be categorized. By using dimensions, businesses can make timely and informed decisions that give them a competitive advantage.
There may be instances when a user may find that a particular dimension was incorrectly used and is affecting the analytics of the company. In this blog post, we will walk you through how to change dimensions on General Ledger Entries in Business Central, even after they have been posted.
Dimensions on Posted General Ledger Entries
Dimensions are a tool that businesses use to categorize transactions and help decision-makers understand the data they generate. Without dimensions, it can be challenging to make informed decisions and manage a company effectively. In Business Central, it’s important to tag transactions with dimensions accurately to get the most value out of them.
For example, a sales entry could reflect information using multiple dimensions, such as which account the entry was posted to, the location of the sale, the seller, and the customer. With this information, businesses can make informed decisions based on the data generated by their operations.
How to change dimensions on Posted General Ledger Entries
If a user posts a G/L entry without the necessary dimension code attached, or if the dimension code was incorrect and needs to be changed, Business Central provides a way to quickly correct these errors. To change a dimension on a Posted General Ledger Entry, follow the steps below:
1. Search for and General Ledger Entries archive
2. On the General Ledger page, find and select the entry that you would like to change the dimensions for
3. Select the Correct Dimensions action
4. Within the Draft Dimension Correction page, you can toggle on Update Analysis Views if your team uses that functionality and/or update the Description if desired
5. In the New Dimension Value Code cell, make your desired changes
In our example, it was necessary to use the ellipses (next to the Dimension Code column) to add both Dimension Codes that we were interested in changing within the Dimension Correction Changes section
6. Select the Run at the top of the page.
7. Choose to schedule this change or toggle on Run Immediately
After acknowledging that the Dimension Correction was successful, it may be necessary to log out and log back in to confirm your changes were successfully made to the General Ledger Entry.
Once you’ve completed the correction process, your new dimensions will be linked to the Posted General Ledger Entries, and your corrections will be saved. This streamlined correction process reduces the need for unnecessary entries to fix errors, which can save your company valuable time.
It is important to note that correcting the dimensions in the General Ledger does not also update the dimensions on related documents and entries. For example, if the General Ledger Entries were related to a Posted Sales Invoice and a correction was done on one of the dimensions in the G/L, the dimensions on the Posted Sales Invoice are not updated.
